SUNRISE - January 20, 2011

“We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time”. T. S. Eliot, Little Gidding

There is nothing I can say or add that would not diminish the beauty of this line from T. S. Eliot.

SUNRISE – January 18, 2011

“Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever.” - Isak Dinesen

I am an avid collector of motivational quotes and of late, ones that deal with TIME.  Having had the opportunity to experience just a few of the difficult diversions that life can throw at me, I fully subscribe to the notion that all new experiences are only relative to the experiences I have already had.

Just recently, my hip has started to bother me, making going up and down the stairs in our two story home, not as much fun as it used to be.  I know my lovely bride wants to trade abodes for a one-story home, so perhaps she gained access to a Haitian Voo-Doo doll, scraped up some of my hair (what doesn’t recede, grow into a pony tail, just falls out),and is putting a hat pin into the hip of the poor little straw facsimile of me.  If so, we may be moving next week.

However, I actually somewhat enjoy the experience of trying to make it upstairs without wincing too much, as it reminds me of going through chemotherapy treatment, not that long ago, when I couldn’t walk at all.  You see; all is relative.  The difficult time I spent in Cancer treatment recovery has, so far, made it easier for me to deal with all the relatively minor inconveniences of life that have followed.

“We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they're called memories. Some take us forward, they're called dreams.”  - Jeremy Irons

...no personal sunrise pic today...my son is consolidating files on my computer and it is "thinking" right now and I can't access my uploaded pictures.

SUNRISE - January 3, 2011

The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want now.  - Zig Ziglar
January 3, 2011 Sunrise 7:24 am

This is a very difficult concept to grasp when you are younger as what what you want most and what you want now seem to be one in the same.

As one gets older and acquires more of what you want now, hopefully, one also gains a bit more wisdom regarding what one wants most.  It is easy to get caught up in the concept that a "thing" will give you what you want, when in reality, the "thing", at most, is just the stepping stone to what one wants most.

"The most important things in life are not things."  - Art Buchwald

Self confidence, love, satisfaction,  knowledge, freedom, TIME, etc.; these are what we want most.  A car, a house, a spouse, a job, a phone, a computer, new clothes, etc.  is how we think we will gain the 'what we want most'.

TIME is an enemy when one permits emotions such as: unhappiness, desolation, illness, loneliness, anger, fear, etc. take control of your thoughts.

TIME is at its greatest worth when one permits emotions such as: happiness, self-confidence, appreciation, acceptance, understanding, love, etc. to have dominance in your soul.

Like the law of supply and demand, items in great supply have a lower perceived value than those that are in short supply. Diamonds, gold, real estate in a desired area, come to mind, but what about TIME?  When one is younger and in good health, TIME is infinite and its value diminishes as TIME is wasted and spent on frivolous endeavors.

When one departs on a vacation with a clear destination and goal in sight and a specific amount of TIME to get there, to enjoy the moments and then return home, we are very conscious and appreciative of our days and hours.  You have to make reservations, plan the itinerary, pack clothes, get your tickets, get to the airport/port/bus at a specific time, so you can arrive at the destination at the desired time, so you can have the maximum pleasure and see and do everything that your allotted TIME will allow.

How many interesting events, places and things to do are right in our own back yard that we have never seen, done, or visited, but that others that live far away, will plan, pack and travel here to spend their valuable TIME enjoying what we take for granted.  We have no sense of urgency, because we have "all the TIME" in the world.

One day one discovers that there is indeed a limited amount of time and the moments become much more precious and the greatest pleasures of TIME are not 100 or 1000 miles away.  It is right where we are.

SUNRISE - December 26, 2010

December 26, 2010 Sunrise 7:22 am
I have already become the early riser (daughter with a 7:00 am orchestra practice start) and I am the designated caffeine re-fueler/lunch packer in this home.

I am pretty much always (is that self-canceling?) already up at Sunrise, but have not given it the attention it deserves and the meaning it contains in each of our lives.

Sunrise is a daily opportunity to commit to a "New Day's Resolution" - with is 365 times more effective that just on Jan. 1 each year.

Wikipedia: Time is a part of the measuring system used to sequence events, to compare the durations of events and the intervals between them, and to quantify rates of change such as the motions of objects.  Time has been a major subject of religion, philosophy, and science, but defining it in a non-controversial manner applicable to all fields of study has consistently eluded the greatest scholars.

“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” -  Carl Sandburg
