SUNRISE - January 17, 2011

January 17, 2011 Sunrise 21 am
"We should every night call ourselves to an account; what infirmity have I mastered today? What passions opposed? What temptation resisted? What virtue acquired? Our vices will abort of themselves if they be brought every day to the shrift." – Seneca

As we all are our own worst enemies and perhaps our sharpest critics, the daily calling to account the goals, hopes , dreams and promises made for this day will do one or the other: I will be inspired onward for yet another day with new dreams and promises or step back from my goal and give TIME the lead.

Like a horse unbridled, rushing towards the unknown of a dark forest, TIME cannot be reined in or reversed, but it can be guided left and right, like a sailboat using the opposing wind to race to its desired destination.  It is not the destination, but rather the journey that is the best adventure.

I spent a bit of time working on my gratitude list at Sunrise today.  The obvious went on paper first: family, friends, shelter, etc. But, I soon realized that although these must be on the list (and sadly, some cannot put these on their list) I felt I needed to move up one category above things to the category a but more ethereal.

Love.

I am grateful that I am able to love and be loved.

The list is still growing.  I will share what is on my list, in no discernible order, in following posts.  Writing the list was an incredibly gratifying exercise I highly recommend.  Write down all the obvious: spouse, children, family, warm house, car that works, job that is secure, etc. first.

Tear that page off and put it aside temporarily.

Now, start on the real list, with the caveat that it can’t be a thing that can be ‘seen’ or ‘touched’.  Watch how long the list gets.  As it is said, “The most important things in life aren’t things”.

This list, edited and reviewed daily,  will pretty much coat my day with Teflon where disenchantment and disappointments just can’t seem to stick.

SUNRISE - January 2, 2011

"Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right." - Oprah Winfrey

January 2, 2011 Sunrise 7:24 am
So, here we go.  We are off and running for another New Year.  I suppose some think their new year may be just another hopeless rendition of all the other years.  Some have ill regard for their past year and 'hope and pray' for a good year to replace the past year(s) disappointments.  Control what you can, absorb and use the rest.  Intend for your year to be better and good chances are - it just may turn out that way.  Magnetically speaking, attract what you want in your life with a positive attitude.

It is true that circumstances occur in each of our "year of TIME" that we cannot control.  Accidents, weather, the economy, taxes, or the passing of a loved one, are all pretty much beyond our ability to personally control.  We do, however, have a great deal of control over how we allow these uncontrollable events to impact our precious TIME and for the length of time we allow it to affect us.

Every golden moment of every day has its value.  How we decide to live that moment is truly ours, regardless of the circumstance of environment around us.  Great musical works of art were created by Jewish composers while interred in concentration camps during WWII; while others around them lived their days in dark despair.  The common man would never wish these conditions upon another human being, however, the unconscionable environment was the same for both.  The deciding factor was one of human choice, living by intent, exerting personal control over seemingly uncontrollable circumstances.

We should all live our lives with well-crafted intent.  We should intend to be happy and satisfied.  We should readjust our goals daily.  We need to constantly fine tune our goals and plans to get that 'radio dial signal' of control to be just right.  All musical instruments need to be regularly tuned to keep the sound the way it was intended.  We should re-tune our direction daily to be the instrument for which we were intended.
Sometimes a seemingly impenetrable roadblock will appear in your chosen path.  Accept the detour.  Make it your new path by choice, not by denial or submission.  Enjoy the scenery along the new way.  You just might find it a pretty good ride.

The Road not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
and sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
and looked down one as far as I could
to where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
and having perhaps the better claim
because it was grassy and wanted wear;
though as for that, the passing there
had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
in leaves no feet had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference

...Robert Frost

“So often we allow life to dictate to us how we live and what we do. We become a victim of our own circumstances with no purpose, design or intent. Living a life of intent means we take charge of our lives and direct ourselves to whom and where we want to be. Intent won't just happen it takes effort and commitment.”
